HATE: Why We Should Resist it With Free Speech, Not Censorship

Monday, April 9, 2018 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In her new book HATE: Why We Should Resist it With Free Speech, Not Censorship (Oxford University Press, May 2018) Nadine Strossen, president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) from 1991 to 2008, argues that expanding free speech, not limiting it, is the solution for changing the hearts and minds of those who espouse hateful ideologies. She dispels many of the myths and misunderstandings that have permeated the debates of what constitutes, “hate speech,” including what is and isn’t protected speech. Strossen’s powerful argument on behalf of free expression promises to elevate the debate around free speech and illuminate upon when words have the power to go too far.

Come join us for a book launch party and listen to Jamal Greene, Dwight Professor of Law at Columbia Law School, interview Nadine Strossen about her book and the role of hate speech in recent political discourse.
