Abstract

This article examines the historical moment that gives rise to Ostalgie, a collective discourse of nostalgia from East Germany. Two central issues representing nostalgia included individual and social identities. Motion pictures that were labeled products of nostalgia included "Sonnenallee" and "Good Bye Lenin!" Nostalgia is described as a form of resistance to colonization which responded to social contradictions that are exposed by reunification and integration. The plots of the films are described.
