Abstract

The article discusses a pilgrimage to Vimy, France carried out by Canadian World War I veterans who fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The importance of the battle to Canadian national identity is detailed by the author. In this sense, the article is broadly concerned with Canadian collective memory surrounding the battle and World War I. The author describes an unveiling ceremony headed by British King Edward VIII for the Canadian National Vimy Memorial at the battle site. The work of the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League in organizing the pilgrimage is detailed.
