Abstract

The article discusses fiction that focuses on patchwork quilts. The author suggests patchwork quilts represent the ordering of history into narratives and can be used to represent family histories or autobiographies. She suggests quilting stories of the nineteenth century were less nostalgic. Ann S. Stephens' story "The Patch-work Quilt" presents an autobiographical story of a woman's childhood. Catherine Sedgwick's story "Patch-work Quilt" uses a quilt to illustrate cultural memory.
