Abstract

Whilst there are many tangible products of Barbados' colonial heritage, the most striking and influential is Barbadian cricket. Barbados is renowned as the most prolific per capita producer of top flight players in the world and to many Bajans cricket is a cultural institution. Since the last quarter of the nineteenth century cricket has been a major determinant of the cultural relationships established between the dominant minority and the mass subordinate community, helping to reduce the potential for conflict between the two, very different cultural traditions. Cricket has also preserved nineteenth century social relationships into the twentieth century, thus providing an example of the power of culture in the face of general social, economic and political change.
