Abstract | The cover story is presented which discusses the 1916 World War I Battle of the Somme, France in British collective memory, historiography and popular culture from 1916 through the early 21st century. An overview of memorials for the First Battle of the Somme is provided. The British Field Marshal Douglas Haig's role in the Battle of the Somme is discussed. The trench warfare and casualties of the battle are also discussed.
