Abstract | The article discusses certain multicultural, multilinguistic and multiracial communities that have become symbols of the peaceful co-existence of groups that the apartheid state was intent on destroying in South Africa. The decision by the post-apartheid state in 1994 that Triomf revert to its former name amounted to an attempt to appropriate the memory of Sophiatown for the new master nationalist narrative. |
