Narratives of New Brighton: Representations of the Port Elizabeth township in official discourse, cultural memory, and public history

The article discusses certain multicultural, multilinguistic and multiracial communities that have become symbols of the peaceful co-existence of groups that the apartheid state was intent on destroying in South Africa. The decision by the post-apartheid state in 1994 that Triomf revert to its former name amounted to an attempt to appropriate the memory of Sophiatown for the new master nationalist narrative.
