| Abstract | The article discusses the use of nostalgia and memories of better economic times in U.S. West rural areas that allegedly appealed to armed protesters in rural Oregon who occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters building in January 2016. According to the article, demonstrators advocated a vision of rural America that could return if government land use, management, and ownership would be scaled back.
