Abstract | Weingrad discusses Jeffrey Mehlman's assertion that the intellectual lineage of French post-structuralism can be traced back to the 17th-century apostate-messiah, Sabbatai Zevi by examining the writings of Georges Bataille. Mehlman has suggested in two books that the transgressive spirit of Sabbatianism was transmitted by Gershom Scholem to his close friend, Walter Benjamin, who then imparted the Sabbatian mindset to Bataille, the French thinker.
