Abstract

There are two events which merit this special issue of History & Memory in honor of Saul Friedländer. The first took place sixty-five autumns ago, when Pavel Friedländer was born in Prague. As he and history have testified, it was "at the worst possible moment, four months before Hitler came to power." Indeed, soon after chaos came to prevail, and a long darkness descended. Related to this "intentional" reason, yet not predetermined, is the "functional" reason: the publication this year of the first volume of Saul Friedländer's Nazi Germany and the Jews, The Years of Persecution, 1933-1939. This work embodies a life-time of travail, to remember, understand and represent that which tempts forgetfulness, resists clarity and defies narration.
