Abstract

This case study examines Canadian collective memory of World War II through an analysis of the memorial at the garden of the Abbaye d'Ardenne in Normandy, France. German forces murdered Canadian prisoners of war at the Abbaye during the Normandy campaign. The author describes the war crimes trial of the German regimental commander responsible, Kurt Meyer, and its importance to the construction of memory surrounding the murders.
