The article focuses on the practice of Italian American families in New York City creating Nativity crèches called prescepi. According to the article, these small objects serve to illustrate religious teachings and play an important party in family history and historical memory within families. Topics also discussed include elite art versus art produced at the home, the mixing of religious and popular culture symbols, and the role of this artwork in community building.
