Abstract | The article discusses U.S. historiography on, and collective memory of, World War I, also referred to as the forgotten war. It examines the depiction of World War I in U.S. popular culture such as literature and motion pictures, World War I in U.S. political culture, particularly concerning the Gold Star Mother Pilgrimages and the Bonus March of World War I veterans during the Great Depression, and scholarly analysis of the reasons for the U.S. entering World War I. It also discusses the military history of World War I.
