| Abstract | This essay attempts to bring to life the architecture of Vienna's oldest synagogue, the classicistic Stadttempel by Joseph Kornhäusel, in terms of the tradition of the worship and spiritual hopes for the sake of which it was founded. The author's childhood was lived, to some extent, under the shelter of this tradition. He draws on his memories to find access to his interpretation of historical data connected with the foundation of the Tempel and to explore the interconnection of the style of the Tempel's architecture and the religious function of the building. The duties and problems of an author's personal involvement in the writing of history, and especially the history of art, are a major concern. Added to the essay are a transcription of the first by-laws of the Stadttempel and Isaac Noah Mannheimer's (the Tempel's first spiritual leader's) preface to the collection of his chancel orations in which he expounds the Tempel's founders' purposes and hopes in an appropriately lofty style, which may be compared to the elevated language of the Tempel's architecture. /// L'article essaie de redonner vie à l'architecture de la plus ancienne synagogue viennoise, le Temple de la cité néo-classique de Josef Kornhäusel, à la lumière de l'office traditionnel et des espérances spirituelles de ses fondateurs. L'auteur a passé sa jeunesse au sein de cette tradition. Il recherche dans ses souvenirs pour retrouver les dates historiques liées à la fondation du temple et la relation entre le style de son architecture et sa fonction religieuse. Les devoirs et les problèmes que trouve un auteur impliqué personnellement en écrivant l'histoire, surtout l'histoire de l'art, sont particulèrement importants et significatifs. En annexe de cette étude se trouvent les premiers statuts du temple et la préface d'Isaac Noah Mannheimer à une collection de ses sermons dans lesquels il explique les intentions et les espoirs des fondateurs du temple -- dans un style noble similaire à l'architecture du temple. /// Der Artikel ist ein Versuch, die Architektur der ältesten Wiener Synagoge, des klassizistischen Stadttempels von Josef Kornhäusel zu verlebendigen, und zwar im Lichte des traditionellen Gottesdienstes und der spirituellen Hoffnungen der Tempelgründer. Der Autor verbrachte seine Jugend zu einem gewissen Maße im Schutze dieser Tradition. Er sucht in seiner Erinnerung um Zugang zu finden zu den mit der Gründung des Tempels verbundenen historischen Daten, und um den Zusammenhang zwischen dem Stil der Tempelarchitektur und der religiösen Funktion des Gebäudes zu untersuchen. Die Aufgaben und Probleme eines persönlich involvierten Autors bei der Geschichtsschreibung, insbesondere der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung sind von besonderer Bedeutung. Im Anhang zu der Studie befinden sich die ersten Statuten des Stadttempels und Isaak Noah Mannheimers Vorwort zu einer Sammlung seiner Kanzelreden, in welchen er, in einem der Tempelarchitektur vergleichbaren erhabenen Stil, die Absichten und Hoffnungen der Tempelgründer erläutert.
