Abstract | An essay is presented on the Cathlapotle Plankhouse, a Chinook Nation heritage site located on the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Washington state. Particular focus is given to the roles of social and public memory in the development and management of the site and to debates over its use and value. Details on nonpublic events held by the Chinook Nation at the site are presented. The site's relationship to the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark expedition is also discussed.
