Shulman Seminar Room, 1219Please join the Harriman Institute and the Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) for a talk with Nate Schenkkan, Project Director of Freedom House's Nations in Transit. Rachel Denber, Deputy Director of the Europe and Central Asia division at Human Rights Watch, will serve as discussant. This event is part of the Harriman at 70 Lecture Series. Nate Schenkkan is the Project Director of Freedom House's Nations in Transit, an annual survey of democracy in the 29 former Communist countries of Europe and Eurasia. Prior to Nations in Transit, he worked as a Senior Program Officer in Freedom House's Eurasia programs, working closely with offices in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and acting as lead researcher on two special reports on Turkey's media and internet sector. Before Freedom House, he worked as a journalist in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. His articles on Central Asia and Turkey have appeared in Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, World Politics Review, Russian Analytical Digest, and Eurasianet. He is a graduate of the Harriman Institute's MARS-REERS program.
