Tuesday, March 5, 2019

2010 Advocate Bakary Tandia presided over The Abolition Institute’s most recent ceremony recognizing individuals and/or organizations who are working toward the elimination of slavery in Mauritania. The Abolition Institute, which is based in Chicago, awarded the 2019 Aichana Abeid Boilil Award to Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and two staff members of WGHC Radio/Chicago. Aichana Abeid Boilil is the first woman to be rescued from slavery by SOS-Slaves, The Abolition Institute’s partner organization in Mauritania. In addition to his work at The Abolition Institute, Tandia is a case manager and policy advocate at African Services Committee in NYC. Since 2011, Tandia has led workshops for HRAP participants on how to make the most of the program. He has also interviewed a number of HRAP applicants over the years.
