In the recently released book Anti-Gender Human Rights: The Legal Reasoning on Bolsonaro's Administration on LGBTI+ Policies (2019-2022), 2024-25 Advocate Gustavo Coutinho analyzes how the Bolsonaro government operated a legal and symbolic offensive against the LGBTI+ movement - not by chance, targeting gender and sexuality as central targets in its cultural war. The result of his Master's research, which was awarded best dissertation in the Human Rights and Access to Justice field in 2023, the book is a tool for understanding how moral panic, the idealized cis heteronormative family and anti-gender rhetoric were mobilized as political instruments, and how the human rights language has been appropriated by the far-right in Brazil, with terms such as “diversity” and “free speech” being distorted to justify setbacks in rights of LGBTI+ communities. Gustavo is the Operations Coordinator at ILGALAC.
