2010 Advocate Bakary Tandia (speaking) and Sean Tanner, founders of The Abolition Institute, led a delegation to Mauritania and Senegal in May. Tandia reports: “No words can describe how thrilled I am about the visit. For me this visit was a culmination of many years of struggle to eradicate slavery and promote human rights in Mauritania.” The delegation met with government officials and victims and included jazz artist Tammy McCann Simpkins, University of Chicago Associate Provost Aisha El-Amin, Chicago attorney and human rights expert Michael Kurtz, and hip hop artist Che “Rhymefest” Smith among others.
