August 30th is the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

Wednesday, August 26, 2020

Enforced disappearances are a result of conflicts or periods of repression in at least 85 countries around the world and have been frequently used as a strategy in complex situations of internal conflict, especially as a means of political repression of opponents.

The International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 20 December 2006 and August 30th has been declared as the  International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances by the UN General Assembly resolution 65/209 on 21 December 2010.

There are many organizations working to shed light on enforced disappearances. Some of them are members of the International Coalition Against Enforced Disappearances.
