ISHR Connects Students and Advocates
Graduate student Akiko Kobayashi works in Mombasa.
Tuesday, June 21, 2016
Each summer, ISHR sends Columbia University human rights students abroad to contribute to the advocacy efforts of organizations led by alumni of the HRAP and AHDA programs through the
Graduate Student Volunteers Program
(GSVP). This summer, ISHR sent graduate student Akiko Kobayashi (pictured) to Mombasa, Kenya to work alongside 2014 Advocate Esther Adhiambo, founder and executive director of
Initiative for Equality and Non-Discrimination
(INEND).
INEND is local non-profit organization that undertakes strategic actions towards equality, acceptance, and inclusion of sexual and gender minorities. Akiko is currently working with INEND on planning and implementing a needs assessment survey on violent incidents against sexual and gender minorities in the Muslim majority region of Kenya.
Akiko Kobayashi is pursuing Master of International Affairs in Human Rights and Humanitarian Policy at the School of International and Public Affairs.
