This past September, the Almeda fires blazed through Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon, leaving nothing but ash. Niria Alicia, M.A. in Human Rights Candidate, is a member of the community affected by the devastating fires. A few weeks ago, The New York Times wrote an article about the destruction the fires brought to Oregon.

Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) and the Law School Human Rights Institute (HRI) are thrilled to congratulate long-standing collaborator, Catherine Coleman Flowers, for receiving the Macarthur Fellowship.  ISHR and HRI have worked with Coleman Flowers to draw attention to the sanitation crisis facing Lowndes, County Alabama and communities across the US.

In early October, 2020-21 Advocate Francis Asong was honored by Humanitarian Awards Ghana for his contributions to improving the lives of people with disabilities. Francis is the Executive Director at Voice of People with Disability Ghana (VOICE Ghana). 

This was—and is—an important step in dismantling the “Doctrine of Discovery” that has always plagued the U.S. legal system.
