Preventing Violent Extremism in Indonesia

Tuesday, September 6, 2016

The Program on Peace-building and Rights at Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights (ISHR) is working with the Islamic State University of Banda Aceh to develop a semester-long “Curriculum on Social Harmony Teachings in the Qur’an and Hadiths.”

The curriculum is a product of two conferences in Banda Aceh titled  “Seminar on Islamic Teachings: Dialogue, Peace and Conflict Resolution” and “Social Harmony Teachings in the Qur’an: Islam, Dialogue and Modernity.”

Based on the conferences, Columbia and the Islamic State University of Banda Aceh published a collection of essays in Bahasa and English -- Social Harmony Teachings from the Qur'an and Hadiths: Islam, Dialogue, and Modernity.

The Peace-Building program also plans to transfer the curriculum to the Islamic State University in Java, and then to other Islamic State Universities in Indonesia. Arrangements are being explored to translate the curriculum into Arabic for dissemination to the broader Muslim community.
