President Donald J. Trump said he will “absolutely do safe zones in Syria.” David L. Phillips, Director of the Program on Peace-building and Rights, writes in the Huffington Post that establishing safe zones is a consequential decision and th benefits and risks must be carefully considered.
Phillips argues that safe zones will serve as a sanctuary for displaced Syrians, reduce ISIS controlled territory, and serve as a launch point for rebel groups fighting ISIS. However, they will also require significant military assets that put US troops in harm's way.
David L. Phillips is Director of the Program on Peace-building and Rights at Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights. He served as a senior adviser and foreign affairs expert to the US State Department during the administrations of Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama.
