Abstract

The article discusses the teaching of the history of the U.S. Civil War, public memory and the popular perception of the Battle of Gettysburg as a definitive moment in the conflict. Emphasis is given to topics such as the the Gettysburg Address, the command of general Joshua L. Chamberlain, and depictions of the war in television, film, books, and art.
