Abstract

The extent to which the appearance of the soldier Sir Philip Sidney in 'Monuments of Honor,' playwright John Webster's script for the 1624 Lord Mayor's parade in London, underscores the powerful cultural memory of a dead hero is described. There is also a possibility that Webster was a witness to the funeral parade for Sidney in February 1587.
