| Abstract | Popular documentation and communication centres in Brazil began to appear as a result of urban social movements. At the outset, they intended to preserve the history of the struggles of the lower classes, and gradually developed into popular information services which aim at filling the gap due to the lack of libraries able to answer the informational needs of the subordinated classes. Nowadays they work in collecting, organizing, preserving and transferring documents produced by or for popular movements. Presents a study of the popular centres including their objectives, activities and social function as an example of many forms to deal with information, documentation and communication as an important channel to promote democracy.
