Transnational development and the ruthless elimination of indigenous communities in present day Bolivia

Ricardo Calla Ortega

Professor and Anthropologist
Former Minister of Indigenous and Native Peoples Affairs in Bolivia.

Ricardo Calla has been working for 26 years on issues related to the rights and needs of indigenous peoples and peasant communities, poor rural and urban populations, and to the environmental impacts of development programs in the Andean region. He has a long standing academic career, having led field work research and undergraduate and postgraduate courses at different public and private universities in Bolivia and Latin America. He has published books, maps and articles, on Andean ethnology and ecology. In the early 1990s, he initiated the area of Andean and Amazonian anthropology studies within the FLACSO program in Latin America and was the founder of the Universidad de la Cordillera, Bolivia.
