Dr. Alejandro Rivera Marroquín and his team at the Chiapas Secretary of Health (Mexico) marked the National Day against Homophobia, Lesbophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. Dr. Rivera said:
"For nine years, I thought that I was mentally ill because of my sexual orientation....The unconditional love of my dad and my mom allowed [me] to confront homophobia that one step away from home could have ended my life [for] loving a person of my own sex. Let's tear down all the closets, the closets of shame, stigma, discrimination and violence. Let's do it now."
Alejandro is the executive director of the Office for HIV/AIDS and STIs (or STDs) at the Ministry of Health of Chiapas, Mexico. He is a medical doctor and holds a master’s in public health sciences specializing in HIV/AIDS, human rights, gender, and public health management.
