Chair: George Andreopoulos, Chair, Professor of Political Science, John Jay College & The Graduate Center, CUNY.
Speaker: William F. Schulz, Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School.
William will present on: "Despite Cruelty: Why I Still Have Faith in Human Rights Values"
Drawing upon this chapter, Dr. Schulz will respond to the question most frequently asked of him during his Amnesty years, “Given all the horrors you hear about and see day after day, how do you retain any hope that human rights will triumph in the end? How do you sustain your faith in humanity?” This presentation will consider the nature of evil and the sources of human rights hope.
William F. Schulz, Senior Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School, served as Executive Director of Amnesty International USA from 1994-2006. His upcoming book from Penn Press, Reversing the River: A Memoir of Hope, History and Human Rights, draws upon his experiences from those years. After leaving Amnesty, Dr. Schulz taught human rights at NYU and served as President of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.
