ISHR and the Indigenous Peoples' Rights Program commend Columbia University’s unveiling of a new plaque honoring the Lenape People who lived in the greater New York area before and during the colonization of the Americas – and who are part of our community today.
The plaque reads, "The Lenape lived here before and during colonization of the Americas. This plaque recognizes these indigenous people of Manhattan, their displacement, dispossession, and continued presence. It stands as a reminder to reflect on our past as we contemplate our way forward."
The Native American Council at Columbia, Office of University Life, and Office of Multicultural Affairs held a ceremony introducing the plaque on October 10th in the courtyard in front of John Jay and Wallach Halls, where the plaque is located.
