In a new RightsViews article, graduate student Luiz Henrique Reggi Pecora argues that the new conservative agenda enforced by Brazilian President Michel Temer neglects the state’s obligations towards human rights that are entrenched in the Brazilian Constitution and human rights covenants ratified by Brazil.
He voices concern that Brazil’s policies related to human rights have already suffered since President Temer's election, particularly noting the downgrading of the the Secretariat for Human Rights from Ministerial status to a subsection of the Ministry of Justice.
Luiz Henrique Reggi Pecora is a graduate student at the Human Rights Studies M.A.’s program at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University. His research interests include indigenous rights, political activism in civil society, and migrant’s rights.
