Human Rights Graduate Group Completes Successful Charity Drive
Tuesday, January 12, 2016
The Human Rights Graduate Group, in partnership with SIPA Spectrum, SIPA Gender Policy Working Group and Columbia University Students for Human Rights, hosted a charity drive to benefit New Alternatives, a organization dedicated to helping homeless LGBT youth.

Created in 2008, the mission of New Alternatives is to increase the self-sufficiency of LGBT youth  in need and to enable them to transition out of the shelter system and into stable adult lives. They provide case management, education services, life skills training, community-building recreational activities, opportunities for self-expression, and support services for HIV+ youth.

Throughout November and early December, volunteers set up donation boxes in the International Affairs Building and six campus dormitories. Thanks to the generous support of the Columbia community members the charity drive was a success. Several boxes of clothes, hygiene products, underwear, socks, and schools supplies were collected and brought to the shelter.

If you are interested in volunteering with  New Alternatives, email Misty Padilla at misty@newalternativesnyc.org,  Volunteers make up the foundation of every aspect of New Alternatives.  Whether preparing a meal, running an ongoing group, assisting with youth registration, assisting Case Managers, or hosting a fundraising activity, volunteers have the opportunity to participate and contribute to a vitally important mission.
