Abstract

Abstract Abstract: “Memory’s Borderlands” explores the work of Halifax’s Onelight Theatre Company, focusing particularly on their Return Ticket: Halifax-Abadan-Halifax, which premiered at the Neptune Theatre Studio in November 2009. Part of Onelight’s ongoing Civilian Project, this innovative production is a deeply personal reflection on the experiences of Onelight’s Artistic Director Shahin Sayadi and Managing Director Maggie Stewart. Centering on Sayadi’s 2008 voyage to his native city of Abadan, Iran, it mixes live stage action with sophisticated digital media in order to reflect upon themes of family, time, and place within the context of war, loss, and diaspora. Foregrounding the gaps between individual and collective memories and their representations onstage, it also underlines the crucial role of such representations in building a more equitable and intercultural Canadian theatre.
