Abstract

An essay is presented which discusses Kansans' 20th century collective memory of the Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado's expedition in search of a legendary golden kingdom in 1541, or Quivira, which ended in what is also known as Quivira, Kansas (as of 2012, it is called Lyons, Kansas). An overview of the artifacts from Coronado's expedition is provided. The Wichita Indians' collective memory of Coronado's expedition is also discussed.
