ISHR Human Rights Research Fellowship

The ISHR Human Rights Research Fellowship will provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable research experience, while supporting the work of Columbia faculty conducting human rights-related research.

Students who receive the Fellowship are expected to complete approximately 80-120 hours of research assistance during the academic year. The research opportunities selected for the 2020-2021 academic year are available below. ISHR will award one research stipend per opportunity in the amount of $1,500. Priority will be given to HRSMA and UHRP students.

Edited by Daniela Ikawa, ISHR's Adjunct Assistant Professor, among others, this exciting Research Handbook combines practitioner and academic perspectives to provide a comprehensive, cutting edge analysis of economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR), as well as the connection between ESCR and other rights. Offering an authoritative analysis of standards and jurisprudence, it argues for an expansive and inclusive approach to ESCR as human rights. 

ISHR Student is working to rebuild her community after Almeda Fires

This past September, the Almeda fires blazed through Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon, leaving nothing but ash. Niria Alicia, M.A. in Human Rights Candidate, is a member of the community affected by the devastating fires. A few weeks ago, The New York Times wrote an article about the destruction the fires brought to Oregon.  

Summer Volunteer Program 2020

During summer 2020, three Columbia University students volunteered with organizations affiliated with the Alliance of Historical Dialogue and Accountability Fellowship (AHDA) alumni and one with an organization affiliated with the Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) alumni. These opportunities were created through the Summer Volunteer Program based at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights.

This interactive workshop will explore the intersection of the arts and human rights and how it is used to catalyze social change in communities across the globe, and inspire human rights movements.
