Abstract

Music is "about becoming," said Daniel Barenboim, "it's not the statement of a phrase that is really important, but how one gets there and how he leaves it and how he makes the transition to the next phrase." Ever since the nineteenth century, writers have been exploring this connection and wondering aloud if there isn't something even providential about the German relationship to music.
